DivineComedy

Page layout design and AR experience for Inferno 29, 30 and 31 from the Dante’s Divine Comedy.

The Divine Comedy is an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri about a man undertaking an journey outside the known world, which leads him to visit the souls in Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The poem is divided into 3 canticles, Inferno (Hell), Purgatory, and Paradise (Heaven).

AI Image Generation

For the images of this project I used MidJourney v1.0 and Dall-E v1 Private Beta.

The prompts in most cases were the exact sentences from the Poem without any change. Experimenting to see what visuals will be interpreted by artificial intelligence for each verse.

Next step was to extract or create graphical elements inspired by the original books.

The Grid & The Concept

To evoke the cyclical nature of Dante’s Divine Comedy, I designed a grid format that echoes the descending circles of Hell. The reader must rotate the page to navigate the text, creating a sense of immersion that intensifies as one delves deeper into the infernal realm.

AR Experience

Ideation & Sketching

The original idea for the AR Experience was to create an augmented reality experience for the designed book. Inside this tunnel each page would act as a doorway to the next page. The pages would rotate by tapping of the user and after the full rotation cycle, the next page will be unlocked and the user will be able to move forward to the next page in an immersive tunnel effect.

After conceptualizing this idea, the next step was to sketch out a rough visualization of how this AR experience would work. This was done in order to gain a better understanding of how to bring the idea to life before beginning the actual design process for the augmented reality experience.

The Modeling of the Ceiling

Inspiration

The inspiration for this 3D ceiling model came from the iconic starry night sky painted by Giotto di Bondone on the ceiling of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy in 1305. Giotto’s masterful fresco depicts a medieval interpretation of the heavens as described in Dante’s Divine Comedy, with concentric spheres encircling the Earth against a deep blue backdrop dotted with golden stars.

With help of the Cinema 4D software, a simple 3D digital model representation of the ceiling was created and designed to be included as part of the augmented reality experience for this project.
